Hits 1 Weekend Countdown - 2021 April 17

This is the 16th countdown of 2021 and the 3rd in April. Last week, "willow" from Taylor Swift was the #1 song for the third straight week in a row. Will it continue to be #1 for a fourth week in a row? Scroll down to find out.

This week, there are again 4 songs entering and leaving. "Remember That Night?" from Sara Kays (was #29), "What You Know Bout Love" from Pop Smoke (#18), "Anyone" from Justin Bieber (#9), and "My Head & My Heart" from Ava Max (#8) are all leaving the countdown this week. Ava Max's and Justin Bieber's songs set a new record for the highest ranking songs to leave the countdown the next week. They were at number 8 and number 9 respectively, and had both experienced a 2 spot jump up in their last week on the chart. Pop Smoke's song fell out of the countdown for a few weeks in February before turning. In its last week, it rose 5 spots. Sara Kay's song had been on the Weekend Countdown for only 1 week last week after being on Hit-Bound for about 2 months.

The 4 new songs are "Shy Away" from Twenty One Pilots, "Kiss Me More" from Doja Cat/SZA, "deja vu" from Olivia Rodrigo, and "Mr. Perfectly Fine (Taylor's Version)" from Taylor Swift. They are debuting at number 29, 27, 22, and 20 respectively. "deja vu" and "Mr. Perfectly Fine" debuted and were on Hit-Bound for only one week last week. "Shy Away" and "Kiss Me More" skipped Hit-Bound and went straight to the Weekend Countdown. Doja Cat and SZA's song had considerable air-time on Hits 1 the past few weeks, at least once every 2-4 hours. I don't recall hearing Twenty One Pilots' new song that much, maybe just once or twice on Hits 1.

For the 26 existing songs, 5 are staying in place and 5 are moving up or down by only 1 spot [3 up and 2 down]. So 16 (62%) of those 26 songs moved by more than 1 spot. Of those, 5 dropped down in position with an average decrease of -4.4. The other 11 moved up with an average increase of +5.0.
Average movement on the chart excluding songs that moved by 0 or 1 spot was +2.06 spots. Including all 26 existing songs, movement was +1.3 spots. These are the highest averages for overall movement on the chart so far in 2021.

The biggest drop was 9 spots, with Billie Eilish's "Therefore I Am" tumbling from #3 to #12. This is is lowest position in all of 2021. It was previously at #11 on March 6 and 13. Otherwise, it has regularly been in the top 10 or top 5 with an average ranking of 6.64 for the first 14 weeks of 2021. The next biggest drop was only 5 spots for Jessia's "I'm not Pretty" which went from #21 to #26.

The biggest jump at 11 spots was a tie between two songs, "MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)" from Lil Nas X went from #22 to #11, and "We're Good" from Dua Lipa went from #14 to #3. "MONTERO" just debuted last week and "We're Good" was at #7 two weeks ago. The next biggest jump was 8 spots for AJR's "Way Less Sad", going from #15 to #7.

The fourth column in the table shows a song's change in rankings compared to last week. Songs with no change have a 0. New songs have a dash (-).

An interesting note, this week I noticed at least 2 slip-ups on the countdown that referred to its former number of songs, 45. In the first part of the intro Spyder Harrison said, "Before we get to this week's fresh 45..." and there was an automated ident that said, "The 45 biggest hits in North America." It is likely these are just mistakes, but it would be nice to get back to 45 songs, even if it was 3 hours in length. This is the 13th countdown of 2021 and the final one in March and the first quarter. Last week, Drivers License was #1 for the fourth week in a row. It is now the outright the top song of 2021 with four week at #1. Will it extend its time at #1? Scroll down to find out. This week, there are 3 songs entering and 3 leaving. Joshua Bassett's "Lie Lie Lie" (was #9), Sigala/James Arthur's "Lasting Lover" (#19), and 24kGoldn's "3,2,1" (#26) are all leaving the countdown. Joshua Bassett sets a new record on the countdown for the highest ranking song to fall out of the countdown from one week to the next. The previous record was the number 13 position for Ariana Grande's "34+35" just two weeks ago on March 13. Of those 3, "Lasting Lover" was the oldest song, being on the countdown since its premiere on January 1st.
